We heard from Charlotte Hutchinson (née Parker), who started working at the school in September 2021, twenty-one years after leaving the school as a student.
What do you remember of being a student at Hymers?
I was always keen on science so most of my memories are science lessons and science teachers. Other than that it was the Snow Ball (Christmas Dance), the JCR, results day, and going to Hull Fair at lunchtime when in the sixth form.
What did you do after leaving school?
I went on to get a degree in Biomedical Sciences before becoming a Clinical Biochemist at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. When my son was born I gave up my career to be a stay at home mum. I now have three children, and the eldest two are at Hymers.
What is your role at Hymers College?
I returned to work at Hymers College in 2021 and I’m the Biology Technician. I set up the practicals that the students do in lessons and maintain all the equipment. I also take care of the department’s pet axolotls, Axol and Lottie.
How does it feel to be back at the school?
When I started working at Hymers I was actually returning to work after a break of 15 years, which felt very daunting! However, returning to Hymers felt like coming home, and made it so much easier. My form room was in Biology with Mr Roberts when I did my A levels, so my current workplace was very familiar to me, and it was lovely to have the chance to work alongside some of my old teachers, such as Mr Summers before he retired.
