Teacher Feature - Mr McTeare

With a career at Hymers spanning many years, Mr Mcteare has seen the school through subtle changes, memorable moments, and countless cohorts of students. Known for sharp wit, genuine enthusiasm for teaching, and a talent for sparking curiosity, they’ve built a legacy rooted not just in academic guidance, but in the laughter and thoughtful conversations that happen along the way.

From mysterious doors hidden behind lockers to favourite hobbies that blend creativity with quiet observation, their reflections offer a charming glimpse into the person behind the lessons. Whether sharing advice for alumni or recalling the pride of seeing former students succeed, their stories highlight the lasting impact a dedicated teacher can have, both inside and far beyond the classroom.

What was your favourite "hidden spot" at Hymers?

If I told you that, it wouldn't be hidden. I've always wondered where the door - mostly hidden behind the lockers in the corridor from the Main Hall to Chemistry - leads to.

How has Hymers changed or stayed the same - since you first arrived?

The decor in B3 doesn't seem to have changed much.

What is one thing about this school that has kept you here for so many years?

Students that are genuinely interested in the subjects I teach.

What is the most rewarding experience you've had with an OH after they graduated?

I once found a really good quote online (about supply-side economics if you're interested) that I thought would be good to use in my lesson. It turned out to have been written by a former student of mine (who was working as an economist for HSBC at that point). He has been back to Hymers for a visit since.

What advice would you give to the alumni who are currently navigating their careers?

Transferable skills are where it's at. It's impossible to know what jobs will still be needed (and what new ones will have emerged) in 20 or 30 years' time.

How do you hope your lessons have impacted students' lives outside of academics?

Mostly for the laughs we have (sometimes) had as we learn. Maybe from the guidance offered regarding study and career choices after leaving Hymers.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

Like a lot of people, I don't like the idea of presenting to an audience (I've never spoken in a whole-school assembly). I guess a dozen teenagers is about my limit.

What is your favourite hobby outside of teaching?

I enjoy photography and a bit of casual birdwatching. Sometimes I will combine the two!

If you weren't a teacher, what would you be doing instead?

Hmmm, probably something to do with finance; accounting or insurance maybe.

What is one thing you would like to be remembered for, beyond teaching?

My wit and style? Perhaps not. Since I like photography, maybe I'll get round to taking a photo that would be worthy of an exhibition. Photos will endure for much longer than the photographer!
