England’s World Cup match vs DR Congo rather decimated the field for the annual Old Hymerians golf competition held at Hull Golf Club. However, plenty of regulars, plus a few new faces turned up at the immaculate Kirk Ella course to compete for the four annual trophies.
David Hider took the G. Kenneth Clark Veterans Trophy with 35 points by two from Richard Gore.
The Division 2 Palmer Trophy went to Mark Shreeves with a best of the day 40 points. He won by seven shots over Anjon Malik who went off early with recent OH Past President Duncan Hider.
The Chambers Cup (now Division 1) was first played for in 1922 and was the original OH golf trophy. Gary Evison had 32 points, but was just pipped by Alex Limb who got it going on the back nine and carded 33 points.
Alex’s gross 80 was agonisingly one shot short of the leading score for the Scratch Cup, where Jonathan Clark came back in 36 to win the trophy for the first time since 2009.
Fish and chips were enjoyed afterwards amongst cries of anguish and then joy from the clubhouse as the football reached its conclusion. The 2027 event will take place at Hull Golf Club in early July – look out for details next year.
