OH Annual Dinner 2025

Saturday 20th September saw many OHs return to the School for the annual Hull Dinner. Despite the wet conditions the evening was full of reunions and celebrations. Mark Bentley, OH President 2025–2026, was proud to join the distinguished list of OH Presidents and attend the evening with his son Henry, one of our youngest Old Hymerians, who left after completing his A Levels this summer. Representing a three-generation Hymers family, this year also marked Mark’s 45th Hull Dinner, a tradition he hopes will continue for many years to come. Headmaster, Justin Stanley, updated Old Hymerians on current events and successes at the School, before Dinner was served.

Our Master of Ceremonies this year was Rebecca Jones (Nee Johnson) OH 1995-2001. Rebecca is now a Sky Correspondent after starting her career as a BBC News Trainee and later ITV News in the Midlands. Sean Scott (OH 1996–2006) was our ‘In the Hot Seat’ guest this year, where he was interviewed by Becky about his success since leaving Hymers. Sean is the founder of Vuba and spoke warmly of his time at Hymers, crediting the experience with shaping his ambition and determination. As a proud recipient of the John Hymers Bursary, he reflected on how being a 'working-class' student at Hymers gave him the drive he carries today. Sean emphasised that he would not have the same determination and ambition had he not attended the school.

We were truly touched to welcome so many Old Hymerians who had travelled such long distances to be with us. It was wonderful to see Ryan Lovelidge (OH 1985–92), who made the journey from Vancouver, Canada; Georgina Jenkins (OH 1995–2005), who joined us from Dallas, Texas; and Layla Hassan (OH 2008–10), who came all the way from Denmark. We are so grateful to them and to everyone who travelled near and far, for making the effort to spend the evening with us.

Many Old Hymerians look forward to 'catching up' with former teachers and we had in attendance Mr Morris & Mr King. Mr Penny & Mr Bingham were accompanied for the evening by the 'Spring Bank Stompers'. Our OH Lunch regulars, donned their best dinner suits to attend and reminisce about their Rugby days at the School.

The Class of ’95 enjoyed a 30- year reunion to School, while a 40-year reunion brought together a vibrant group spanning two tables, expertly organised by Jamie Wheldon (OH 1975–1985) and Chair of Governors, John Kittmer (OH 1978–1985). For many, it was the first time stepping back onto school grounds since leaving four decades ago, making the occasion especially meaningful. The creation of a dedicated WhatsApp group rekindled old connections and provided the spark that turned fond memories into a truly memorable reunion.

Entertainment after dinner was provided by 'Daisy Dot' a current Sixth form student in Gore and carriages left a little later than Midnight! Next year the Dinner will be held on 28 November 2026 more details to follow shortly.....

Feedback

A great event – well-done for organising so well

Another marvellous feat of organisation and style that produced an
atmosphere full of the right sort of friendly feeling. We enjoyed a classy meal , a glass of wine and the
intersting and informative speeches and  the interview. There are so
many talented people who have gone through Hymers and of course there
will be many .

I really enjoyed Saturday evening - and seeing so many faces from the past. I didn’t catch up with everyone I would have liked to. Fingers crossed some of them will be at the London dinner!

My thanks to you and everyone involved in making it such a special evening.
