Mr Prescott, Head of Chemistry, joined Hymers in 2003 and has been at the heart of the Chemistry department ever since. He has inspired generations of students to think carefully, precisely and independently. From much‑loved traditions to national success on the competitive chemistry stage, Mr Prescott’s influence at Hymers has been both wide‑ranging and deeply rooted. In this reflection, he shares some of his favourite memories, guiding principles and the values he hopes students carry with them long after they leave the classroom.

What is your favourite memory from your time teaching at Hymers?

Probably the students winning the 2016 national final of the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Division (the organisation with the motto which cannot be improved: Accuracy and Precision) Schools’ Analyst Competition at the University of Keele, in which Rhea H, Parth K, Laszlo K and Beinn K were ‘well ahead’ of their rivals

Which school tradition do you miss the most or still love participating in?

Does 23 years count as a tradition? The Year 8 Periodic Table competition and display is well worth all the effort. Older students will often pause with their friends to have a look at ‘their’ element.

How has Hymers changed or stayed the same - since you first arrived?

Friendly when I came; I hope still friendly.

What advice would you give to the alumni who are currently navigating their careers?

There is a lot of wisdom in Jim Carrey’s opinion: “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer.”

When you step onto your company’s premises, or log in from home, take a moment to think on that your main responsibility is to work.

Seek not the praise of people.

How do you hope your lessons have impacted students' lives outside of academics?

I hope students have acquired an enjoyment of, and a willingness and capacity to think, including in applying their knowledge and understanding in unfamiliar situations.

I also hope they have realised for themselves that high standards of character, integrity and reliability are treasures to which to aspire above any other qualities in the rat race.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

That I am the legitimate holder of a Rugby League World Club Challenge Winners’ Medal 2000: Melbourne Storm v St Helens at the then JJB Stadium, Wigan.

What is your favourite hobby outside of teaching?

I am churchwarden of St Peter’s Church, Anlaby, and I umpire league cricket.

If you weren't a teacher, what would you be doing instead?

Perhaps a chemical engineer, perhaps something to do with Modern Languages.
