What is your favourite memory from your time teaching at Hymers?

There have been many memorable experiences, especially during residential trips. A standout occasion was walking up Helvellyn in the rain. Despite the poor weather, students remained enthusiastic stating ‘it's only rain’ and on our arrival they were awed by the vastness of Red Tarn. You’ve got to experience geography to truly understand it.

Which yearly event do I find memorable? (wording changed)

Growing up in a military family - with my dad serving in the Gulf War while I was in Year 7 - I always find the Remembrance Service a moving experience. Whenever Old Hymerians return, it highlights the lasting connections that exist, and I am continually impressed by the respect shown by the whole school community. The first time they read aloud the names of the fallen soldiers as members of the school stood up was especially poignant for me.

What is your favourite "hidden spot" at Hymers?

While not hidden - (as an honorary member of the MFL department) if I need to escape, I go to their office for a good chat.

How has Hymers changed or stayed the same - since you first arrived?

The presence of the boarded-up fireplace and the huge cupboards in B6 have not changed though thankfully the drab black curtains have gone. My view has also changed with the new LRC built, although during the demolition of the old buildings I do remember students using the rubble as a backdrop for filming a news report on an earthquake – very resourceful!

What is one thing about this school that has kept you here for so many years?

The students. I hear so many stories about the challenges teachers face in other schools. Hymers students are polite, considerate, and want to achieve (and sometimes just come for a chat). It also impresses me how students here rise to a challenge whether on the sporting pitch or playing in front of the whole school during assemblies.

What is the most rewarding experience you've had with an OH after they graduated?

While not directly linked to the student, I received a lovely email from the Grandma of a past student letting me know they’d got a first-class honors degree. Being reminded of the difference you can make in a person's life is very rewarding.

How do you hope your lessons have impacted students' lives outside of academics?

I hope their experiences of Geography have made them curious about the world in which they live. Whether that is keeping up with (and understanding) global events, changing their lifestyles to be more sustainable and have empathy for others or pushing themselves to explore new places and cultures.

What would you like to ask the alumni of this school?

It would be amazing to ask the alumini to record how Geography (if they studied it) has helped them - whether in their careers or achieving their ambitions. Geography is a ‘jack of all trades’ subject and has so much to offer future students with knowledge, understanding and the transferable skills it covers. It would be great to have real life examples of these.

What is your favourite hobby outside of teaching?

Definitely travel. I love to explore new places and don’t mind if I am roughing it sleeping in a tent or going on a cruise ship. I don’t tend to return to the same place though because the world is such a big place. My next big trip is a USA road trip where I will finally visit Yellowstone National Park (amongst others) a place that’s been on my ‘to visit’ list for some time.

If you weren't a teacher, what would you be doing instead?

Probably working with animals in one capacity or another. In the future (probably once I retire), I would like to be involved with charity organisations like Guide Dogs.

What is one thing you would like to be remembered for, beyond teaching?

My love of exploring.
