We were delighted to welcome Alistair Latham (OH 1981-90) back to school as part of National Careers Week (3 - 7 March 2025). Alistair is a Partner at Wilkin Chapman, working in the corporate and commercial team. As part of our talks in careers week, Alistair answered questions from our students regarding the various path's into Law and how many different roles a degree in Law could open up to them. Students heard about practice sizes, non tradtional roles and the importance of work life balance!

Alistair largely works as a trusted adviser to many family-owned businesses, with turnovers varying from £500k to £30m, with specialities in agriculture and holiday parks. Students learnt about a typical day and the types of clients that he provides his advice to, including guiding owners on areas of growth and profitability. His works often sees him advising and negotiating both national and international supply chain contracts. He also regularly deals with partnership issues, family business disputes, succession planning and implementation, and business structures. Alistair also advises on protection and exploitation of intellectual property. His clients are across a wide variety of industries and sectors, but they predominantly operate in agriculture and tourism and leisure sectors.

Career Week talks where students have the opportunity to speak to professionals in different fields are incredibly important for several reasons and they allow students often get an academic view of careers, but speaking directly with professionals offers a more realistic and nuanced understanding of what a job truly entails. They can hear about challenges, rewards, and day-to-day responsibilities that aren't always highlighted in textbooks or classrooms.

Thank you to Alistair for coming back to talk to our students.
