The entire school community came together this week to mark Remembrance Day with a moving whole-school Act of Remembrance, attended by 25 Old Hymerian guests. The poignant service offered a moment of reflection, allowing pupils, staff, and alumni alike to pause and pay their respects to those who have given their lives in conflict.

The service included readings, music and a solemn two-minute silence, providing an opportunity for all to consider the sacrifices made by past generations in pursuit of peace. We were especially delighted to welcome back to school Lieutenant Colonel Pat Conn, along with OH President Mark Bentley. Pat served as an officer in the Parachute Regiment for his full career and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel overseeing the airfield in the Falklands. He was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty in 1991 as a result. The presence of Old Hymerians, some of whom have personal or family connections to the armed forces, added a special depth to the occasion and reminded everyone of the school’s enduring traditions of service and remembrance.

Following the service, members of the School Cadet Force joined Old Hymerians for lunch in the Memorial Hall. This was a change from the usual venue for Old Hymerian lunches, but the setting could not have been more fitting. Surrounded by the names of those who served, it was a poignant and meaningful location to share stories, reflections, and a sense of gratitude.

Wreaths where laid by OH president Mark Bentley (OH 1971-79) and Old Hymerian Pat Conn (OH 1951-59) as well as representatives from the Junior School, Senior School, Staff and Governors. 

The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering the past while looking to the future with hope and respect.
