Cricketing Ghosts

This painting, signed by Denarius has been donated for the silent auction at the Hymers Gala Dinner November 28 2026.Denarius may be better known to some of you as Andrew Penny, an instrumental teacher at Hymers from 1977 to 2022.

This large framed painting, (114cm by 89cm) in black, white and grey acrylics on canvas, was inspired by those old photographs of young cricketers in front of the school, taken in the early years of the twentieth century. I have often thought of them, innocently playing the great game and wondered just how many of them had a life to enjoy after the First World War.

There is often a low-lying autumn mist on the field towards the old pavilion for those who get to school early and the trees can become the principal actors on the stage. There are certainly cricketing ghosts out there, but they are benign and friendly; they are just looking down on our endeavours and anticipating another season in six months’ time.

(Reserved at £350)

Mounted Prints

We are also producing mounted prints of the above, (44cm by 32cm) priced at £40, signed and in a limited number. All proceeds from the auction and the sale of prints will be donated to the John Hymers Bursary Fund.
