Old Hymerian, Sally Lloyd (née Martin) recently spoke to our Law Society about her career working in Law since leaving Hymers in 2002. Sally studied at Nottingham University and her advice would be to research the league tables for law schools and remember that those that are interviewing you, with their age and experience, they may still favour an Oxbridge or red brick institute. They may not be up to date with what other options are there.
Sally shared her experience of working in the City for a private practice and now working as in-house lawyer for Missoma, a jewellery company. After 5 years in the City at a global private practice after her training contract, she worked a stint at River Island.
Sally shared with us her experiences of working both in-house and private practice. Sally shared the pros and cons of working in private practice and what may suit individual preferences. Hours, pay, types of law, variety of workload and location are all factors to consider.
Sally had some words of advice to share with our students, one she remembers been told to her when she was at Hymers as a student by an OH!
Make the most of University, join the Societies, get as much experience and show a keen interest in the law, read books, visit the courts, make connections. Overall pick what you love and do what makes you happy!
Thanks for your time, Sally. It was great to have you back with us.
