Over the Easter holidays, the History Department took a group of Year 9 and 10 students to the Battlefields in France and Belgium of World War 1. While on the trip, the students managed to pay tribute to 20 of our Old Hymerians who sadly lost their lives during the war.
During the Menin Gate ceremony, which was so powerful as always, students Lizzy, Will and Hannah were honoured to place a wreath to honour Old Hymerians who sadly lost their lives in the conflict.
I have been to the Battlefields fourteen times and this was special because of the way in which the students really interacted with our guide and embraced all the activities from memorials and cemeteries on the hunt for OHs, to the big set-piece of remembrance at the Menin Gate, to exploring trenches and tunnels. This trip enlivens our History of Medicine course, allows the students to grasp the scale of WWI and gives them a chance to explore Ypres and the Somme.

This year the trip included visiting new places, such as Arras and Delville Wood, where the students were able to honour the Old Hymerians that lost their lives fighting for their country.
