A slightly new format this year for the annual summer golf fixture at Hull Golf Club, where five trophies were once again up for grabs.
OH Golf Secretary Jonathan Clark, OH 1980-90 and Hymers Director of Golf, James Windeatt, OH 1991-2001 merged the Old Hymerians event with the school tournament in recognition of the burgeoning numbers of promising young players at the school.
In sweltering conditions, 23 current students and 18 Old Hymerians took to the Kirk Ella course with fairways and greens running firm and fast.
George Clark, OH 2011-21 claimed his fourth Scratch Trophy in five years with an impressive gross 72. His schoolmate James Godber, OH 2014-21 shot 81 to take the runners up spot.
George’s dad Jonathan, OH 1980–90 was in seventh heaven, taking the Division 1 Chambers Cup for a seventh time with 34 points. Second was Adam Franks, OH 1990-2000 with 30 stableford points.
It was great to see Allan Craig, OH 1945-54 at the event. Despite not playing, he joined other ‘super seniors’ on the patio for the traditional fish and chip supper. Allan has won all four of the OH trophies on numerous occasions, his first being the Chambers Cup in 1956. Yes, you read that right, 1956.
Division Two honours for the Palmer Trophy went to Gary Evison, OH 1976-88 with 34 points, just edging out Gary Coggin, OH 1995-97 with 33.
In the seniors category, Edward Clark, OH 1950-58 scored an impressive 32 points to make it an unprecedented treble for the Clarks by winning the Veterans Trophy donated by his father G. Kenneth Clark, OH 1923-26. John Canby, OH 1956-65, settled for the traditional golf ball for second place just one point behind.
The Bastow Trophy was won by Charlie T with a best of the day 41 points. He beat defending champion Max W by two points. It was great to so many students compete in the event – the future of school golf and OH golf looks very healthy.
Scratch winner George Clark made his customary excellent speech to thank the greenkeepers, bar and catering staff and the Pro Shop team. A special mention for his dad for organising the event and to his Grandpa for his special victory. Quite a day for the Clarks!
