Piers Smyth is fundraising to restore freshwater ecosystems in South Africa

After leaving Hymers to study Natural Sciences at Durham Piers Smyth, (OH 2014-20) started his career at Reckitt. He is currently fundraising for WWF to help restore vital freshwater ecosystems in South Africa and support the local communities who depend on them. As part of this initiative, He will be one of just 25 Reckitt employees worldwide travelling to South Africa to take part in hands-on conservation projects along the Tugela River. He has been set an exciting challenge: to raise £4,000 for WWF.

As is the case for many Old Hymerians, South Africa is a country that I have great memories of the 2019 Rugby/Hockey Tour ...

This remains one of the highlights of my years at Hymers, and returning now to contribute to conservation efforts in the communities and landscapes that left such a strong impression on me feels particularly meaningful. As part of this initiative, I’ve been selected as one of just 25 Reckitt employees worldwide to travel to South Africa and take part in hands-on conservation projects along the Tugela River. To kick-start my fundraising, I’ve already climbed the full height of Table Mountain (1,086m) at Rock City Climbing Centre in Hull,  which meant completing 100 ascents of the 11m wall! And in March next year, I’ll be taking on a 54km kayaking and hiking challenge along the Tugela River itself.
