| Life After Hymers |
We are hugely grateful for the continued support our alumni provide to current students in our series of HymersCAN events, especially from two experienced medics whose insights and generosity make a real difference to our students futures. We were delighted to welcome back Yrina and Mark to talk to over 50 students and families about their pathway in to Medicine.
Dr Mark Clayton (OH 1995 - 2002) is a doctor specialising in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine. A graduate of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Mark spends most of his time working at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby but can also be found flying around the skies of East Anglia in his role as a HEMS doctor. Outside of work, he is a long-standing volunteer with St John Ambulance where he acts as the Clinical Lead for the Humber & East Riding area, volunteers with East Midlands Ambulance Service as a critical care doctor and works at a variety of large events across the country.
Yrina Ghrabigi (OH 2014-16) moved from a local state school to Hymers for Sixth Form, where she gained three excellent A Level grades.Yrina then went on study a four year Chemistry degree at York where she then graduated and continued with a Masters in Womens Health at UCL. Following this Yrina started at Hull York Medical School to study a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery alongside a Master of Public Health at Imperial College.Yrina very modestly describes her medical journey so far as a 'long road with many pit stops', we are delighted to welcome her back to Hymers and she is particularly excited to talk to those who are considering their next path after Hymers.
Both Mark and Yrina gave an invaluable insight in to applying for Medicine and the career pathways available to them. Yrina gave high praise and thanks to Mr Prescott for supporting her with her Chemistry A Level leading her on to a Chemistry degree, the students enjoyed sharing stories with her about their lessons with him now!
Mark and Yrina both proudly shared that they were at Hymers on a bursary place and strongly believe that without the opportunity and support from the Hymers Sixth form with their medical application process they may both have been on a different career path. Their continued support to our medics and their knowledge and experience continues as they support our mock medical interview process for our Year 13 medics and Sixth form medic society.
Thanks, Yrina and Mark. We are very fortunate to have your support and the gift of your time.
