Life After Hymers |
Economics and Finance |
Thank you to Freddie Howard, Old Hymerian 2009-2016 who recently spoke to our aspiring Economists and our next generation of investment bankers from his desk in London.
Freddie enjoyed reconnecting on screen with Mr McTeare, who taught him A Level Economics. He has very fond memories of his time in Mr McTeare’s classroom. During his time at Hymers, Freddie studied A Levels in Mathematics (A*), Economics (A), and Physics (A). He then went on to study BSc (Hons) Economics at the University of Warwick, graduating with a 2:1.
In his talk, Freddie shared the journey that led him to his current role and offered students valuable insights into university life at Warwick. He is now an Associate Director within Corporate Banking at Scotiabank, Global Banking and Markets. He spoke about his enjoyment of working in corporate banking and highlighted his particular interest in Behavioural Economics, which he now applies in his work with the consumer team.
Prior to joining Scotiabank, Freddie worked as an Associate in the corporate marketing division at the Bank of Ireland. Before beginning his career in banking, he also completed an internship with UNICEF in Cambodia, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.
We are grateful for Freddie’s honest and relatable account of his career pathway. His generous offer to support Hymers students in building their networks and preparing for the job market was especially appreciated. His advice on interviews and what employers are looking for was both practical and insightful. Our students found great value in learning about the finance industry, including salary ranges and the variety of roles available in the City.
Outside of work, Freddie plays rugby at a local league level for Southwark Rugby Club and actively volunteers for the London Air Ambulance Charity, supporting collections, talks, and fundraising events. He is also a loyal supporter of our Old Hymerian socials in London, where it’s always a pleasure to see him and his contemporaries.
