Law

We were delighted to welcome back Stephen Robinson (OH 1985-95) and Peter Mason (OH 1991-98), alongside current parent  Elizabeth Maliakal, who supported our recent careers in law evening. The event was aimed at students in Year 10 upwards who are considering their career options after Hymers and are showing an initial interest in a legal route. All three of our panelist speakers were able to share their route into their profession alongside some very helpful and useful tips to enter any specialism of law today.

University student, Jasmine Butler Parr, OH 2017-21 also spoke on the evening virtually, she is now in her penultimate year as a Law undergraduate at The University of Manchester.  Jasmine was able to advise on applying to universities to study law and spoke fondly of her time in Hymers 6th form. Jasmine reiterated that the staff support and co-curricular activities that Hymers offers were hugely beneficial to her application for university.

We had many of our students and families who were keen to ask questions afterwards and all of our speakers very kindly offered any further assistance with the students in the future. We are extremely fortunate to be able to draw on such a wide range of expertise in the Hymers community. We are very grateful for the skills, knowledge, and talent that continue to support our current students and beyond their lives at Hymers.

Thank you to all of our Old Hymerian community who are supporting us in this series of careers events with our students. Your help is invaluable and of a huge benefit to Hymers students in 2024.

Stephen Robinson, (OH 1985-95)

Stephen specialises exclusively as an advocate in criminal law. He has practised at Wilberforce Barristers since completing his pupillage with Mark Bury (now HHJ Bury) in 2000. He has developed a reputation as a fine advocate in the Crown Court and also regularly practices in the Court of Appeal.Stephen both prosecutes (as an experienced Level 4 prosecutor) and defends and regularly appears in cases involving serious sexual offending, drugs conspiracies, serious violence, and complex dishonest offending. He also prosecutes regulatory work concerning areas such as health and safety (a recent example being  HCC v MT Ltd (2019) where the defendant company pleaded guilty in relation to having an unsafe system of work for the fitting of crane tyres) and the illegal sale of cigarettes. Stephen has a great deal of experience in defending, often successfully, those charged with sexual offending. These cases have involved both recent and historic allegations.

Peter Mason, OH 1991-98

Peter attended Hymers between 1991 and 1998 and is now a partner at an international law firm, Addleshaw Goddard. They have 1,400 plus lawyers across offices within Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He is a real estate lawyer based in their Leeds office and acts mainly for developers on development and regeneration schemes, as well as jointly leading their Ports team and being a member of their Energy group.
