Sindhu (2006-2016) kindly returned to school whilst visiting family in East Yorkshire and took the time to speak to our students in morning assembly. Sindhu shared her journey from Hymers A-levels to her current role working as an environmental communications specialist in London. Her studies took her to study a BA Hons PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics)  at the University of Warwick and an MSC Media and Communications at London School of Economics.

Sindhu shared how working in climate communications means working to tackle disinformation, by showing how serious the crisis is through science and data, and to share real world stories that inspire hope and actions. At the company she works at now, Greenhouse Communications, they have worked with internationally renowned scientists to launch reports, campaigned against sewage pollution, highlighted the connection between nutrition and regenerative agriculture and called on world leaders across the world to come together for the ocean and nature.

The theme of her assembly was "Three things that she wish she had known when she was younger". She discussed valuable topics such as: Social media doesn't tell the full story, Set your own measures of success, and not just use other people’s, being a doctor, lawyer, engineer are not your only job options. Our students were interested to hear how Sindhu pivoted her plans to become a lawyer and move in to the climate space. Her parting words were:

"I’m going to end this by being slightly biased, and encourage all of you to consider a job in sustainability or the climate and environmental sector. Whether you are an engineer, a lawyer, a writer, a coder, a biologist or a data analyst, the world needs you and your skills. And even on days where I feel run down, knowing I am a part of something that is helping people and the planet, makes it worth it"

Sindhu was delighted to see many of her former teachers who give her a warm welcome back and enjoyed chatting with her after assembly.

Thanks for giving us your time, Sindhu. We look forward to seeing you at an event in London in the future.
