Engineering

Jonathan Slater studied at Hymers College from 1993 until 2000 and recently returned to the school via Zoom to talk about his engineering career.

After leaving school, I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Chemical engineering. Not knowing what to do next I did teacher training at the University of Hull (teaching secondary science - specialising in physics). On completion of my teacher training, I decided on a career in engineering and I have been working in the energy industry for over 15 years. For the past 10 years, I've been focused on Carbon Capture Technologies and currently I am a Principal Process Engineer working in the Consultancy Department for Altrad Babcock based in Glasgow. I specifically am involved in decarbonisation projects and policy associated with the energy transition and Net Zero.

In the call, I gave a brief talk about how I got to where I am today and tried to emphasise the key points and decisions that got me there. Having recruited graduates onto the company graduate training scheme very recently, I also tried to give my perspective on what differentiates candidates during the interview and selection process and hopefully the student took away something useful from it all.

Thank you Jonathan for giving up your time to help.
