We  talk a lot about the strength of our alumni community, but seeing our Old Hymerians in action is something else entirely. We were incredibly lucky last week  to have alumni who gave back so generously and shared their real-world experience, guide, and inspire our next generation of medics.

Thank you to Amit Chawla ( OH 2000-2010) and Ben Mays ( OH 1997-2007) who kindly gave up their Wednesday evening to come back to school and speak to our students about their career path since leaving our Sixth Form. Entering the medical field is a monumental journey, and having trusted mentors to share their journey makes a difference to our students and families, especially from those who have already walked the same corridors before them.

Amit is a final-year Resident Orthopaedic Surgeon at York Hospital. He left Hymers in 2010 to study Medicine at Imperial College London, before completing his Foundation Programme in Coventry and moving to South London for Core Surgical Training. His specialist orthopaedic training has since taken him between West London and Yorkshire, and he'll complete this in April 2027. From there, he's heading to Derby and then Melbourne for fellowships in specialist knee surgery, before returning to Yorkshire with the aim of becoming a consultant knee surgeon. Alongside his clinical work, Amit has spent time as a match-day doctor for Hull FC and Scunthorpe United, and works part-time as medical advisor to a health-tech start-up using AI to improve surgical scheduling.

Ben is a registered Paramedic, Emergency Medicine Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Senior Critical Care Paramedic, and Clinical Lead for LIVES. With experience across frontline emergency and critical care, he is passionate about developing future healthcare professionals, supporting clinical excellence, and showcasing the rewarding career opportunities available within pre-hospital and emergency medicine.
