Sixth Form students in our Business and Econocmics Society were treated to a special session this week as Old Hymerian, John Zhu (1995-2002) reconnected with his alma mater. Joining remotely, John dialled directly into his former classroom  (B2) to share key insights, career milestones, and reflections on his journey since leaving school. John serves as the Chief Economist Asia Pacific at the Swiss Re Institute, a role he has held since December 2021. Based in Hong Kong, he leads the economic research and market analysis for the Asia-Pacific region at Swiss Re, one of the world's leading providers of reinsurance and insurance.

After departing Hymers, John pursued an exceptional academic path, earning a BA in Economics from Trinity College, Cambridge, before going on to complete an MSc in International Political Economy at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The lunchtime gathering gave aspiring entrepreneurs and business minds at Hymers a candid look into life beyond the gates. Drawing on his academic foundation in economics and political economy, John spoke openly about the skills developed during his educational journey that helped shape his professional path.

Throughout the interactive discussion, students engaged in a lively conversation exploring how to navigate university choices, post-Hymers decisions, and adapt to changing global landscapes. John highlighted the essential practical skills needed in the modern business world alongside academic achievement, while offering encouragement on how current students can build confidence and make the most of every opportunity available to them.

The session served as a powerful reminder of the strength of the Old Hymerian network and the lasting bond Old Hymerians share with the school community. John was pleased to see former teacher Mr McTeare on screen too! The Business Society and Hymers College extend their sincere thanks to John for generously giving his time and expertise to inspire the next generation of leaders.
