We were delighted to welcome Old Hymerian, Amit Chawla (OH 2000-10) back to Hymers to speak to our Medic Society recently. Amit shared his journey since leaving Hymers in 2010 when he graduated with 4 A Levels at A* in Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry. He then started his studies at Imperial College, London to study Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Medicine. 

Amit is now a Specialty Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Hull University Teaching Hospitals, NHS Trust, training across both the North West London and Yorkshire (North) rotations. He has a strong academic background with particular interests in healthcare management, service improvement, and digital innovation. Earlier this year, he completed his MBA at the University of Warwick, and he is now focused on combining his clinical experience with new solutions that add value to health-related organisations.

During his talk, Amit spoke to students about his current role and the wide range of surgical procedures involved in his day-to-day work. He discussed both elective and trauma-related surgeries and reflected on why he chose Orthopaedics as his specialism. He offered an honest account of the pros and cons he has encountered throughout his medical career so far.

Alongside his clinical work, Amit is also a surgery advisor for the health-tech start-up, Surgery AI. Many students were also excited to hear about another of his interests, his work as a match-day doctor at Hull City and Scunthorpe United.

It has been wonderful to welcome Amit back to school again in 2025, especially as he joined us for an Old Hymerian Dinner in the Main Hall, returning 16 years after leaving Hymers.
