An evening of medicine for the next generation of medics

Thursday 9 February saw our inaugural Hymers C.A.N (Careers and Networking) event starting with an insight into the medical world.  The evening was open to all aspiring medics and their families in the area and was an opportunity to hear from local experts in their field, along with recent leavers from Hymers about their journey so far. We were delighted to see the room packed with families and students. 

Thank you to all our guest speakers for their time speaking to our current students. A huge thank you to Katie Tinker (OH 2012-2019) and Imogen Saunt (OH 2007-17) who spoke to our students about their time now at University. They shared some useful insights with our current students about the process of applying and their course. We are extremely grateful to them for coming back to school to speak to the students. 

Guest speakers for the event included:

Dr Bruce Charlesworth is Group Chief Medical Officer of Reckitt, a leading health and consumer goods company famous for global household brands such as Dettol, Durex, Nurofen, Gaviscon, Strepsils, and Mucinex. He qualified in medicine in 1996 and subsequently trained in anaesthetics and intensive care. After spending five years in clinical practice Bruce moved into the healthcare product industry with the ambition of using his medical knowledge and commercial acumen to innovate and improve lives on a global scale. Working for AstraZeneca and Pfizer initially, Bruce helped develop and launch an array of pharmaceuticals across a range of indications such as pain, depression, and headache. After leading a start-up diagnostics business as CEO and a health outcomes consultancy company as Global President Bruce joined Reckitt in 2014.
Dr Margaret Ikpoh is a GP Partner at Holderness Health, a practice for 36,000 patients in East Yorkshire and has worked there for 12 years. She is the current RCGP Vice Chair for Professional Development & Standards. She is the practice lead for research and has had previous roles with the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber as a research champion for First5 GPs and AITs. She is also the former Associate Director for Primary Care for Hull York Medical School and is a GP Trainer. At the RCGP, she has been involved in the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Task groups and was awarded Fellow of The Year at the 2021 RCGP Inspire Awards ceremony. She has recently been celebrated at a Women of the Year Event and has been honoured as one of the top 50 most influential BAME professionals by HSJ in October 2022.

Nabil El Mahdawi is a medical Consultant working in Clinical Oncology, a medicine to treat cancer using nonsurgical modalities of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. He has been practicing as a consultant in the Queens’ Center for the last 15 years; prior to that, he completed his postgraduate training in Edinburgh and had his primary medical degree from Libya in 1994. He is active in academic medical research and services development, receiving prestigious awards. Currently, he is the Head of Service of Clinical Oncology and continues working as a super-specialist in lung cancer and gynaecological cancer.
