What makes this nominee inspiring?

Dr Beckie Port is a multi-award winning science communicator recognised for her work by being awarded torchbearer status in the London 2012 Olympics. She has extensive communications, marketing, science writing, public speaking and media experience.

She now manages research communications at Parkinson’s UK, the largest charity funder of Parkinson's research in Europe and the organisation that funded a multimillion-pound study aimed to investigate whether boosting levels of GDNF, a naturally-occurring protein, can regenerate dying brain cells in people with Parkinson's.

Academically, Beckie has a PhD in cancer stem cell biology and virology, she has also previously worked in drug discovery for the global pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp and Dohme, where her research focused on the pre-clinical testing of potential pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cognitive problems in schizophrenia.

Whilst at Hymers, Beckie represented England in Hockey and England Junior Fencing
